China’s official finally enact rules that require online gamers to use real names rather than pseudonyms. Rules are effective from August 1, 2010.
This rule according to the Ministry of Culture of China is part of a national campaign to protect children and foster virtual gaming industry. Regulations apply to all types of multiplayer games and games on social networks.
However, the rules are appraised gamers and analysts will be little impact on the industry. online game operator in China, Shanda and Tencent games say they have been put in the registration rules to use real names since some months ago and they stated that there was no significant impact on their business.
Both games are in fact operators questioned the effectiveness of those policies. Policy on it will fail to protect minors without an identity recognition system that is credible.
“Children can also borrow or even buy the ID card online if they really want to play games, new rules could not look after them.,” Said Dong Hu, a Shanghai gamer origin as reported by Xinhua on Monday (02/08/2010 ).
Agreed that, Li Li, deputy director of Shanghai Information Law Association, said such rules would not run smoothly without an effective national identification system. “Without the foundation, the rule will only increase costs for operators and bringing them to greater risk,” said Li.
