Scientists Dismiss Terabyte Capacity Constraints

Computer scientists from the University of California, San Diego, managed to eliminate the problem of terabytes. They even managed to make a world record by sending a terabyte of data in just 60 seconds.

Records are solved in an annual competition ‘Sort Benchmark, a world competition that aims to find the data sorter technology. In this competition, UC San Diego Jacobs School of Engineering also successfully broke the record for the fastest rate of data sorting. They successfully sort the data in range of one trillion and 172 minutes.

Companies that are looking for trends, efficiencies and other competitive advantage has shifted to the arduous task of sorting types of data that requires special hardware for data centers. The Internet also has created a lot of scenarios where sorting of data is very important. Ads on Facebook pages, the recommendations on Amazon, and Google’s search results in all the results from sorting the data has a size of several petabytes. One terabyte is 1,000 petabytes own.

UC San Diego computer science professor Amin Vahdat, who led the project, said that if a large company wants to run queries on all display pages or products sold, such datasets need multi-petabytes and one that developed by many gigabytes every day.

He added that the company encourages limiting the amount of data can be sorted and determines the speed. It is a real time data analysis.

“However, better technology and equipment needed. At the center of the data, sorting is often the most pressing obstacles in higher activity at many levels,” said Vahdat who directs Centre Network Systems (CNS) at UC San Diego.

Two new world records from UC San Diego is one of the 2010 type of results released on http://sortbenchmark.org, a site run by computer scientists from industry and academia that manage the competition.

This competition provides a benchmark for the sorting of data and develop an interactive forum for researchers who seek to improve the data sorting techniques.
