An Ariane rocket carrying two satellites successfully into orbit after a launch from Guiana, France.
Quoted by Reuters on Wednesday (30/06/2010), Ariane-5 got off from the European space center in Kourou, French Guiana at 6:41 am local time.
26 minutes after reaching the sky, the rocket released the satellite Arabsat 5A. Arabsat is designed for telecommunications interests in the Middle East and North Africa. The satellite weighs 4.9 tons and is made by EADS-Astrium and Thales Alenia Space.
After the Arabsat-5A apart, six minutes later, the Ariane-5 directly off South Korea’s Satellite COMS. In addition to telecommunications, the COMS satellite will also be used for monitoring weather and sea which will be operated by the Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI).
“After separation COMS satellites, Astrium in Toulouse will manage the satellite. Then our space center in Korea will take over the COMS to conduct a series of experiments from orbit,” said Yang Koonha KARI officials.
COMS weighs approximately 2.4 tons and was also made by EADS-Astrium. The launch represents the 37th time successful satellite launches using the Ariane rocket.
